UOG G3 Local2030 Conservation Corps welcomes 10 new members

October 20, 2024 | The Guam Daily Post - “For 10 University of Guam students, Friday marked the first day of their journey through the island’s streets, jungles and waters as they learn skills aimed at attaining a green, sustainable future for Guam and the region.

One by one, the 10 new members shared their motives for joining the Guam Green Growth Local2030 Islands Network Conservation Corps Season 2, but all were motivated by a desire to help prepare their islands to live sustainably for generations to come.”

 

The Ocean Foundation Awards Funding to Eight Island-Led Regenerative Tourism Initiatives Around the World

September 23, 2024 | The Ocean Foundation - “The Ocean Foundation is pleased to announce that it will grant a total of $118,266 to eight different regenerative tourism initiatives on island nations around the world through the Regenerative Tourism Catalyst Grant Program. These awards are supported through the Foundation’s partnership with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Program Office Adaptation Sciences program, National Marine Protected Areas Center, and the Local2030 Islands Network, with support from the U.S. Department of State (DOS). These grants are intended to support island communities in implementing regenerative tourism projects and approaches as part of their broader efforts to build climate resilience and advance their sustainable development goals, and enhance island leadership through participation in the Local2030 Islands Network. Grant recipients will share their methods and results through the Network’s global, peer-to-peer Community of Practice on Sustainable and Regenerative Tourism. “

2023 - “On outreach, Local 2030 Islands network has hosted eight webinars on building back better post COVID-19 and shared 125+ bright spots with over 2,000 participants from 60+ countries; and secured $9 million in financial support from the United States as part of the resident’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE) to build capacity for islands to measure and advance progress on local climate goals.”

Local2030 Islands Network at COP27: Side Event at U.S. Center

November 14, 2022 - On Monday, 14 November, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Local2030 Islands Network convened an event in the U.S. Center at COP27 entitled Island and International Partnerships for a Net-Zero and Climate Resilient Future.  The event dialogue focused on the potential impact that international partnerships such as the Local2030 Islands Network and the Renewable Energy for Latin America and the Caribbean (RELAC) initiative can have to increase climate ambition and sustainable development through peer-to-peer learning, common goal setting, data for decision making, integrating co-developed climate knowledge and information, accessing lessons and insights from front runners, and leapfrogging technologies. Leaders engaged in a candid discussion on specific opportunities to collaborate, with the Netherlands announcing it would join the Local2030 Islands Network.

2022 - Local2030 Islands Network Featured in the SMILO World Island Networks and Organisations 2022 Report. “The Small Islands Organisation (SMILO), together with its close partners started in 2020 the process of identifying island networks and organisations around the globe that help protect the environment or cultural heritage of islands. This mapping work enables us to analyse their roles, actions, scope and difficulties, and also to pinpoint opportunities for the different players to cooperate.”
