Nature-based Solutions and Island Food Security

Nature-based solutions are increasingly being seen as an approach for addressing climate adaptation opportunities in fisheries and improving food system resilience. Nature-based solutions are deeply connected to community empowerment and leadership as well as community stewardship and sustainable management practice to maintain and strength the ecosystem services needed for adaptation and mitigation outcomes.

Key Takeaways

The Platform highlighted a number of innovations and bright spots in islands around the world.

  • Fisheries, including small-scale fishers, can be an important champion and implementer of nature-based solutions as they improve the resilience of local fishing and coastal communities, especially with regards to improved food security, sustainable livelihoods and climate adaptation

  • Marine Protected Areas (MPA), including Managed Access and Reserves (MA+R), are valuable tools that take an NbS approach while enhancing biodiversity and ensuring food security in local communities with sustainable management and catch limits.

  • Nature-based approaches are critical to ensure food security and enhance resilience, including from climate impacts and economic impacts from disasters (natural disasters as well as pandemics).
